Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need an OpenNode account?

Lightning Enable is non-custodial software—we help you accept Lightning payments but never touch your funds. OpenNode is the regulated payment processor that handles Bitcoin custody, liquidity, and optionally converts to fiat. Think of Lightning Enable as the "glue" between your application and OpenNode's infrastructure.

What is KYC and why is it required?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is a regulatory requirement for payment processors. OpenNode must verify your identity and business to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. This typically takes 1-2 business days and requires submitting business documentation and identity verification.

What are the total fees?

Lightning Enable charges a flat monthly subscription ($199-$299/mo) with NO per-transaction fees. OpenNode charges 1% per transaction. So your total cost is: Lightning Enable subscription + 1% of transaction volume to OpenNode.

Can I start testing before OpenNode approves my account?

Yes! You can use OpenNode's testnet (development) environment immediately after signing up. Mainnet (real Bitcoin) requires KYC approval, but you can build and test your integration while waiting.

Is Lightning Enable a payment processor or money transmitter?

No. Lightning Enable is software infrastructure that enables payment integration. We never hold, control, or transmit funds. All money transmission, custody, and regulatory compliance is handled by OpenNode. We are a software-as-a-service company, not a financial institution.

What happens if I cancel my subscription?

Your Lightning Enable API key will be deactivated at the end of your billing period. Any funds in your OpenNode account remain yours—we never touch them. You can resubscribe at any time to reactivate your integration.

What's the difference between the three plans?

Standalone API ($199) is for any platform wanting REST API access. Kentico Commerce ($249) adds native Xperience by Kentico integration. L402 Microtransactions ($299) adds the L402 protocol for pay-per-request API monetization—ideal for AI and data APIs.

Do you support refunds?

Yes, Lightning Enable supports refund processing through OpenNode. Note that Lightning refunds are processed as new outgoing payments, not reversals. Refund capability depends on your OpenNode account having sufficient balance.

What We Don't Do (By Design)

Hold customer funds
Control private keys
Process settlements
Charge our own transaction fees

All money transmission, KYC, liquidity, and settlement remain with OpenNode. We're infrastructure software that enables Bitcoin payments without custody.
