What’s L402?
L402 is the HTTP-native payment protocol. Your API returns 402 Payment Required with a Lightning invoice. The client pays. The request completes. Three lines of code on the client side, middleware on the server side, and paid APIs just work.
Why This Is Huge
Until now, accepting L402 payments meant using OpenNode — which requires KYB (Know Your Business) verification. Great for companies, but a closed door for indie developers, solo creators, and anyone who isn’t operating as a registered business.
Strike changes that. If you’ve already completed KYC with Strike as an individual, you can get an API key today. Businesses can KYB if they prefer. Either way, you’re in.
This means:
